More about Parkinson's
Parkinson's disease is a condition in which the patient loses control over their movements. This is due to the loss of nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine. This chemical is important for controlling movement.
The exact cause of Parkinson's disease is not yet known. We do know that ageing or exposure to certain toxic substances increases the risk of Parkinson's. It is a chronic degenerative disease, meaning it gets worse over time. People usually do not die from Parkinson's disease itself.

How can a physiotherapist help with Parkinson's complaints?
After a thorough evaluation by your physiotherapist, a treatment plan is drawn up. Through a series of questions we map out how the condition currently affects your life. We also assess your posture, strength, flexibility, walking ability, balance and coordination.
- Improve your fitness, strength and suppleness
- Develop more effective strategies for getting in and out of bed, a chair or a car
- Turn over more easily in bed
- Stand and turn more efficiently to change direction
- Improve smoothness and coordination while walking
- Improve your ability to perform hand movements
- Reduce the risk of falling
- Manage more than one thing at a time efficiently
- Take part in the things that matter to you
